The annual Sandwich & Food to Go Designer of the Year competition, invites industry professionals from across the UK to enter and create the best-tasting, best-looking and most imaginative sandwich or food to go product. Here are some of our winners.

Cottage Delight Chutney & Curd Winner

‘California Prawn Roll’ by James Burgess

A totally delectable creation filled with fresh ingredients bursting with vibrant colours and decedent flavours. This roll brings the Californian sunshine to the UK, with its chosen ingredients of black tiger prawns, passion fruit & mango chilli dressing, crisp cos lettuce, avocado, diced cucumber, mango and pink pickled onions all nestled within a brioche sub roll and decorated with caviar and cress no less! What a sandwich.

Mona Dairy Gouda Winner

‘Mumbai Garam Toastie’ by Ivor Peters

Bringing a combination of vibrant flavours and spices together with the clever addition of Gouda – this interesting sandwich is one you won’t forget. It’s a precise blend of Gouda, potatoes, chaat masala, finely chopped red pepper and red onion, mixed with cumin seeds, mint leaves, butter, coriander leaves, and lemon juice all snuggled between a sourdough bloomer.

‘Japanese Fried Chicken Wrap’ by Charlotte Palmer

A bold, innovative and tasty wrap inspired by Charlotte’s love for Japanese flavours. This creation includes breaded chicken, pickled coleslaw, spring onions, and sliced tomato, all dressed with Yuzu Kosho mayo and filled to the brim in a tortilla wrap.

‘Satay Prawn in the Sea Shell’ by Edvinas Smigelskis

A complex and creative seafood sensation all placed into a rice paper and seaweed shell. Edvinas combined marinated prawns in a nut-free satay-style paste; alongside a flavoursome ginger pickled daikon and carrot slaw, mixed with a chilli and coriander sprinkle and a dash of lime.

Futura Foods Gorgonzola Piccante Winner

‘Honey, I’m Feeling Blue’ by Kirsty Fitzpatrick

This cleverly created sandwich tasted too good not to be awarded. It’s a fusion of sweet and spicy flavours all placed between slices of Bretzel sourdough bread topped with Gorgonzola Piccante & Port Cranberry. It’s a genius mix of Gorgonzola Piccante, blue cheese bechamel mix, slices of prosciutto, caramelised pear, candied walnuts and finished with hot honey.

‘Smokey Roll’ by Katarina Broadribb

A stupendous sandwich, featuring locally sourced smoked brisket, smoked rich Gouda cheese, mushrooms, horseradish sauce and herbs has been awarded the official title of Britain’s best sandwich in 2023.

‘Posh Piggy’ by Sam Tebbatt

Do you love a bacon sarnie? Here is a posher version to try. Filled with smoked cooked streaky bacon, stewed apple, stilton custard and even candied bacon!

‘Don’t Worry Pea Happy’ by Chrissie Attewell

A bagel full of summer flavour. A marvellous mix of chicken, three-pea salad, and refreshing yoghurt dressing. It’s a light lunch that will make your taste buds happy.

‘Just Peachy’ by Eleny Minto

Creamy whipped feta with honey and thyme baked peaches, crystallised pistachios and rocket with a drizzle of honey in between two slabs of all-butter croissant French toast.

‘Sticky Chicken Feturger’ by Edvinas Smigelskis

A chicken ‘burger’ with a difference. Jammed packed with feta, chicken thigh, lemon zest, parsley and mint and stacked with beef tomato, an onion ring and accompanied by tapenade mayo.

Catherine Fleetwood’s (Greencore) extraordinary sandwich demonstrated innovation, precision and skill, earning her the title of Sandwich & Food to Go Designer of the Year for 2022.

Hello, Seaside

Sam Tebbatt’s (Melton Foods) sandwich was inspired by the Great British seaside and came with generous helping of nostalgia and chip shop scraps.

This year for the annual ‘Sammies’ awards, entrants competed over four categories which were judged on their creativity, design and technical ability.

H. Smith Steamed Cooked Whole Breast Fillet Category

The Oishii Sando

Susannah Montgomery (The Soho Sandwich Co) created this sandwich after the japanese word ‘Oishii’ meaning ‘delicious’ & ‘tasty’. The judges described this as incredibly moreish.

Mission Foods – Sage & Onion Tortilla Category

Making a Pig of Yourself

Gary McDowell (Deli Lites) created this delicious combination of pulled pork, vintage cheddar and bramley apple and chilli salsa. All of the judges agreed that Gary’s entry should take the prize.
