Every year we spend over £8.2billion on sandwiches, equating to approximately 3.8 billion purchased sandwiches being consumed annually.
Sandwiches continue to reign supreme, making them the ultimate fast food on the go. No longer confined to lunchtime, the popularity of the sandwich can carry us through the day whether it be a bacon roll for breakfast or a smoked salmon sandwich for afternoon tea.
In terms of fillings, last year bacon topped the pool as the most popular sandwich filling. This was the first year we have seen bacon at the top, overtaking the ever-versatile chicken having been the favourite for a number of years. Cheese and ham took joint second place last year in the popularity stakes, with cheese accounting for 15% of the market as the second most used ingredient – just after bacon!
Sandwich spend is up on last year and the triangle sandwich still reigns supreme making 76% of supermarket sandwich sales although last year we did see a growth in alternative carriers like the wrap.
